Singapore launches festival of ideas

SINGAPORE, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Singapore on Friday launched the Festival of Ideas, a two-day event to showcase the country's creative ideas and work.
At the festival held at a district heartland, students will try to impress judges with their creative business ideas in a competition, while the public can vote for their favorite idea, play digital or board games, appreciate music and paintings, or participate in creativity workshops.
Other creative projects on show include 3D animation films and a made-in-Singapore musical.
More than 9,000 visitors are expected at the festival organized by the Creative Community Singapore (CCS).
"The Festival of Ideas is really an amalgamation of raw and seasoned talents to showcase their creative ideas and work. It is also a testimony of the impact CCS has brought to the community," said Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State for Education and Information, Communications and the Arts, at the opening ceremony.
The Singapore government has launched several strategic plans since 2003 to boost its creative industries, such as Singapore Media Fusion 2015, Design Singapore and Renaissance City Plan. Lui said these plans will boost the media, design and arts to transform Singapore into a creative hub.

Flare

SYNOPSIS
Tremors from an earthquake in a neighbouring land reverberate through the lives of various families. Their once peaceful lives are shaken and the people feel deep unease. In the mornings, they awake with hearts trembling, wondering when their nerves will settle.

Their once secure homes now witness the appearance of mysterious cracks in the walls and dubious visitors of the equine-kind.

They must quickly distract and inspire themselves before they waste away with anxiety. They make plans to visit exotic destinations, renovate their homes, purchase the latest electronic products and take on outdoor hobbies.

A middle aged woman stands firmly within a shiny capsule, surveys the re-constructive work beneath her feet and chants fervently, “The future is a great place to be. The future is a great place to be.”

Inspired by Peter Shaffer’s psychological drama Equus, Flare is a narrative kaleidoscope exploring desperation and escape.

Written by Chong Tze Chien and directed by Natalie Hennedige, this collaboration between The Finger Players and Cake Theatrical Productions is an original dramatic work that draws from each company’s signature visuals and potent storytelling devices.

Avenue Q the musical

SYNOPSIS
“The Internet Is For Porn”, “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today”, “It Sucks to Be Me”…. These are just some of the hilarious songs that make Avenue Q unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Currently one of the hottest shows in the West End and on Broadway, Avenue Q is a fabulously furry and fun-filled romp featuring an ensemble of actors and some very adult-minded puppets. It’s ‘Sesame Street’ with a very grown up twist!

You’ll meet Princeton, a fresh-faced college grad, Brian the out-of-work comedian, Internet porn addict Trekkie Monster, Nick the good-hearted slacker, Rod, his investment banker roommate who seems to be hiding a secret, kindergarten teaching assistant Kate Monster, and of course, Lucy the Slut. They get away with things that only puppets can without being arrested.

Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to make it in New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account.

Presented by Singapore Repertory Theatre, the company that brought you Ian McKellen in King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Pillowman.

So take a trip to Avenue Q!
